What to expect after surgery

I’m Dr. Jacques Zhang, one of the few dual-certified plastic surgeons in the Lower Mainland, holding both FRCSC (Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada) and FACS (Fellow of the American College of Surgeons) designations. My practice focuses on reconstructive and aesthetic plastic surgery, where precision meets artistry to help patients look, feel, and function at their best.

Undergoing elective surgery is a big step - and part of getting the best results is knowing what your recovery journey will look like. Here’s a guide to the typical timeline and what you can expect.

Every person and every procedure is unique, as your surgeon, my job is to make sure you get a personalized plan

First Week

In the first few days, you’ll focus on rest and gentle movement.

-Dressings, compression garments, and sometimes small drains help reduce swelling and fluid buildup.

-Your first post-operative visit usually happens within the week to remove drains, if present, or change dressings.

-Watch for warning signs like redness, unusual swelling, or drainage - early communication prevents infection.

-Showering is often permitted once dressings are removed and incisions are secure; your surgeon will guide you.

You may feel tired or swollen, but this is normal. Small, steady progress matters most during this phase.

One Month

By four weeks, swelling and bruising improve significantly.

-Most patients can resume light daily activities or desk work.

-Strenuous exercise and heavy lifting should still be avoided.

-You may continue wearing support garments or following scar-care routines as advised.

Healing continues beneath the surface - tissue is still adjusting, and final results are not yet visible.

Three Months

At three months, you’ll notice a real transformation.

-You can usually return to sports or more vigorous activity, pending clearance.

-Scars soften, tightness lessens, and contours become more refined.

-Any remaining swelling gradually fades.

This stage is about rebuilding strength and confidence while continuing to protect your results.

Six to Twelve Months

By six to twelve months, your final results are visible.

-Swelling is gone, scars have matured, and tissues have fully settled.

-You’ll likely have a final follow-up to review healing and long-term maintenance.

-Protect your results by maintaining a stable weight, using sunscreen, and following your surgeon’s care advice.

Recovery is not just about healing - it’s about achieving balance and lasting improvement.
